Julie Lumsden: About Me

Hello!

Thank you for being here! I’m so happy you are thinking of learning more about art therapy and counseling for you or your family.

Art therapists around the world help individuals, children, and families with life transitions, mood imbalances, improving daily living, and healing from trauma. Art therapy involves active artmaking, the creative process, and applied psychological theory within a therapeutic relationship to enrich lives (American Art Therapy Association, 2022). Sometimes, it might be difficult to find the right words to describe our experiences or emotions. We might think and understand in pictures, colors, symbols, and sensations. I believe all human beings can benefit from embracing our creative nature. Please reach out if you think art therapy might be right for you or your child! No prior art experience is necessary.

As an art therapist, I have specialized, master’s level training for the effective, safe, and intentional use of art in therapeutic sessions. I gently guide selection and use of art processes and materials to meet treatment goals and progress toward healing and growth.

I use holistic and person-centered approaches in therapy along with techniques from the creative arts therapies. I also incorporate evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and parent child interaction therapy methods. I am also a certified yoga teacher (RYT-200), and I love helping clients with meditation and movement if desired.

I have experience working in community behavioral health, in schools, nonprofit organizations, and in private practice. In my clinical training, I worked with an autism-focused practice providing group and individual therapy to children on the autism spectrum of all ages. I am passionate about creating a responsive environment for neurodiverse people and those with varying abilities. I love to help families of neurodiverse children make positive changes and find balance.

I graduated with a master’s degree in art therapy from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. I am a registered mental health counselor intern in Florida, practicing under supervision from a Licensed Qualified Supervisor. I am also a provisional registered art therapist (ATR-P) and receiving specialized art therapy supervision from a Registered Art Therapist. I am working toward the nationally recognized credentials Registered Art Therapist (ATR) and board certification with the Art Therapy Credentials Board.

A little more about me…I love spending time outdoors and being with my pets. I recently moved to Saint Augustine to be close to the beautiful beaches! Baking, cooking, and gardening are my favorite hobbies. I am an artist at heart, and I use watercolor painting for self-care and self-expression.

Julie Lumsden: About Therapy

FAQs

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions and requests below. If you have more questions or would like to schedule an appointment, feel free to contact me.

How long is each session?

Every therapy session is 50 minutes

How do I schedule an appointment?

All new clients must call (904-478-8654) or email (julie@newgrowthsta.com) me to schedule an intake session. If you are a current, existing client, you can view my calendar to request an appointment through the client portal here- your secure client portal.

For new clients, once we speak and schedule the first session, you will receive an email with consent forms and intake questionnaires to complete prior to your appointment. These documents must be completed at least 24 hours prior to the start of the first session.

If you are scheduling an appointment for your minor child, I will need to speak with the parent or legal guardian prior to the first session.

If you are the legal guardian of a child or have shared custody of a child, I am required to obtain legal guardianship and/or custody agreement documentation prior to the fist appointment.

What is your session fee? Do you take insurance?

My session rate is $120 per session

I currently do not accept any insurance plans and would be considered an "out of network" provider by your insurance company, should you have mental health coverage. Upon request, I can provide you with a diagnostic receipt of services (a Superbill) that you can submit to your insurance company. I suggest you contact your insurance company to determine what benefits you have.  All sessions are 50 minutes.

How do I pay for sessions?

I accept cash, all major credit cards, checks, and HSA cards.
